John Theobalds, MD - 3636 16th St., Family Practice

I went to John Theobald's office to get some antibiotics for an infected cut on my foot. It's at the end of some long and wandering corridors in a big apartment building complex on 16th St. in upper Columbia Heights. The waiting room is rather close and dirty with no windows, the receptionist asked for the co-pay up front (only cash, no credit card accepted the first time!). All of the waiting rooms seemed dingy and in disarray, with plastic folding chairs and seemingly forgotten pieces of furniture in the corner. When I finally saw John Theobald, he was quite friendly (although fat and had bad posture, feeding my suspicions about his practical knowledge of health.) He agreed to prescribe me antibiotics.

and then closed the door of the examining room.

"Are you sexually active?" he asked me.

"Uh - yeah. Uh, why?"

"I just wanted to let you know that I also offer gynaecology services," he said with a smile, leaning a little closer.

"No thanks!"

He must have seen a sketched-out look on my face, because he launched into some story about how some former patient had sued him because she got cervical cancer and he hadn't checked, even though she used a different person for gynaecology. But as my friend Jaiva pointed out, women who are not sexually active still need gynaecological services. So his question was inappropriate anyway.

As I left he told me not to drink with the antibiotics. "I should also drink yoghurt for the friendly stomach bacteria, right?" I asked.

"Yes, if you want to," he said non-committally. He didn't give me any other information about the various things you can do to protect your system from the negative side effects of antibiotics (or, for women, to prevent thrush.) Luckily I'd done my internet research myself.

From my brief visit, I was not impressed with this doctor's office - either its cleanliness or competence - and would not recommend it to a friend.

Well I can tell you that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Dr. T.

I see him in his Laurel office, which is honestly a bit dingy, but after living through several years of socialized medicine, I find it to be pretty clean.

I have been seeing Dr. T for years now, and he is one of the best physicians I have ever seen. Sure he is older, a bit heavy, and not the best posture, but he is a kind, caring, and thoughtful doctor.

My husband was having lots of back issues, and the doctors he had seen, just gave him pain meds for it. No doctor looked into what was causing his pain. His first visit with Doctor T, an MRI was set up. After a year of pain, and several doctors in Europe and in the US, we discovered that my husband had a slipped disk.

I think on my first visit, I too was told that he could do paps as well. I wasn't grossed out by it, nor did I find him to be creepy when he mentioned it. He has actually preformed one on me, and I didn't find it strange, or uncomfortable, well anymore than normal.

Dr. T has seen me through some pretty trying times. He has always called to check up on me, and told me that at anytime, I need something to call him, that I didn't have to wait for one of the two days he was in his Maryland office.

He has always been very attentive, caring, and sure. When there was a cancer scare, he was right there along with me, and he called the other doctors offices to get me into specialists right away.

The woman that works in his Laurel office is also a gem. I assume she works in the DC office too, but I can't be sure.

What I can be sure of, is that I have always been treated with respect and care. Too bad the OP and the person who commented, didn't feel as though they had seen a good doctor, because I can tell you, he is not good, he is fantastic.

I went to see Dr. Theobald for a rountine physical and scheduled a Pap Test for the next visit. The doctor seemed distracted during the exam and it hurt a lot. He never said anything to me or tried to make me feel comfortable, physically or emotionally. I was sore and bruised for two days afterward. Dr. Theobald even apologized and said "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be so rough." I left feeling totally violated and I will never go there again. This is not the most pleasant exam in the best of situations, but to be treated so callously and without regard is inexcusable.
